Benjamin Fondane (pen name of Benjamin Wexler), (Iasi, November 15, 1898 – Birkenau, Poland, October 2, 1944), literary critic, essayist and theoretician, poet.
Benjamin Fondane made his debut in 1914, at 16 years old, at “Viata noua”, a magazine of symbolist and modernistic orientation. Together with the director Armand Pascal he set up the avangarde theatre “Insula” (The Island). In 1923 he settled in Paris where he continued to write poems.
During the German occupation of France he was arrested by Gestapo due to a denunciation, as being Jew. He was sent to Auschwitz concentration camp and he was gazed after a few months at Birkenau on October 2, 1944.
